NOT-EXTRACTED SPECIES
2024
If you cannot and should not get your quarried stone, what delirious vein will project on your retina; what color range is going to fill the room; what figure is going to make your book-match wall pattern; what grain is going to rub against your skin; what will thermal mass look like, what is going to define the translucency that filters light?.. In the absence of extracted material species, what else will fill the void and agitate the commonly established norms of natural materiality?
These images speculate on the familiar aesthetic tropes associated with quarried material conventions, from their staging to their cultivation, from their surface organization to the content they hold. They were created for “WE ARE HERE” Exhibition at A+D Museum in Los Angeles, curated by Laure Michelon. Exhibition in view until April 7th 2024.
